Ibiza, Spain

 20 April 2024 - Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza is a resort island just off the coast of Valencia, Spain.  While the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the focus is on resort living and nightlife. Founded by the Phoenicians around 600 BC, the island has been under Roman and Moor rule for centuries, and what seems like every local king and ruler until it got its independence in the 1970s. It is now an autonomous community in Spain.

We walked/rolled about 3 km to the city center where we wandered around the narrow streets and enjoyed some lunch and gelato.  The weather was perfect, in the low 70s and sunny. Too steep a climb to the castle/fort for my scooter, but the harbor area was beautiful.

The way to the city center was paved with modern condo and hotel buildings.  Not very crowded, so tourist season hasn’t hit yet.

Almost made it all the way back to the ship but my scooter battery ran out of juice.  Fortunately, there was a ferry terminal where one of the employees helped me find an outlet to recharge.  An hour of people watching and I had enough juice to get back to the ship and up the ramp. Yes!

The castle stands above the old town part of Ibiza.  Its buildings represent the many conquerors of the island, including several Moorish-era structures.

The castle can be seen from everywhere, including the current day harbor

A memorial to seafarers.

It must have been laundry day.  We saw many apartments with their clothing out drying.

The Renaissance walls have been preserved and are part of why Ibiza is a UNESCO site.

The gelato was delicious!

One of the condo buildings had an interesting rainbow decoration on its balconies.

A small but nice lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor.

Several of the hotels were lit up like Las Vegas!
